Rising to the Challenge - Governor Training Conferences 2012

Browne JacobsonandCATS - allthroughschooling.org.uk

OVERVIEW

The pace of change for schools since May 2010 has been unprecedented. It is therefore essential that learners are served by well-informed and effective governing bodies.

The schools system is facing continuous and significant reform. The speed of change has led to many schools considering the options for creating partnerships with other schools in order to formalise relationships with the local family of schools and to understand and investigate the potential of collaboration as a way of delivering school improvement. The academies programme has introduced further options for collaboration which governors are beginning to consider. Many schools have already responded by moving away from potential isolation and towards 'collaborative autonomy' through partnership with other schools, collaboration, academy groups and other alliances. When determining what the best way forward is for your school, it is important that governors clearly understand their role and duties under the different options. Browne Jacobson and CATS have extensive experience of working with governing bodies and school leaders in developing new structures.

In these conferences we will go behind the political rhetoric to look at the evolving educational landscape. A range of experts will deliver a series of practical workshops designed to equip governors with the latest information and best practice. In particular, we will consider the impact of the Education Act 2011, explore the impact of the academy programme on school governance and consider the wide range of collaborative models schools are implementing to deliver a self-improving school system in their locality.

We are pleased to announce that the National College and RSM Tenon (leading education accountants) are supporting the conferences and both will be running a workshop each.

Topics for discussion (in keynote and choice of five workshops)

  • The changing educational landscape
  • The implications of the Education Act 2011
  • Structures for working in collaborations and partnerships
  • The implications of academy conversion
  • The difference between the duties of governors of maintained schools and academies
  • Financial issues for governors
